On May 22, 2006 it was announced that the Electronic records of 26.5 million U.S. military veterans were stolen from the home of a data analyst for the Department of Veterans Affairs, Jim Nicholson, the department's secretary, said.

The data included the names, Social Security numbers and date of birth of living servicemen discharged since 1975 and some of their spouses, Nicholson told reporters on a conference call from Washington.

The military has joined with three credit-reporting firms to provide the involved veterans with a credit report at no charge. Veterans affected by the theft of the disks should be getting letters. These letters supply information to help the veterans monitor their credit reports.

Richard Fletcher was recently appointed Chair to the Region 5 Veterans Committee by Regional Coordinator, Mary Twitchell.

11/09/05

I'm proud to announce that I was recently appointed by Mary Twitchell PEF Region 5 Coordinator to chair the Region 5 Veterans Committee. The veterans committee was once very active in Region 5, providing support and information to veterans. Recently this committee has been less active. My goals are to create a strong active committee that addresses the issues that affect veterans and to provide PEF Region 5 veterans with timely information regarding veterans’ issues.

As a first step I am trying to identify who the Region 5 veterans are. The information I need is name, address, phone number, e-mail, branch of service and time of service.

Please contact me via e-mail at pef399@yahoo.com or by calling the PEF regional office at 607-785-1699.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Region 5 Veterans Committee, please let me know.

In the next few months I am hoping to have a meeting so we can prioritize our issues and get to know one another.

Thank you for your service and support.

On Saturday 11/12/05 at 11am the Broome County All Wars Memorial will be dedicated at the Veterans Arena in Binghamton.  The state wide PEF veterans committee and many Region 5 members have been involved in this project for several years proving support and fund raising.  Please join David Krobe; the PEF state wide veterans chair, and myself in honoring our fallen heroes.

November 12 groundbreaking for Broome All Wars Memorial

By SHERRY HALBROOK
Delegates to the annual PEF Convention in Rochester received good news and bad news at the veterans luncheon.

On the plus side, they learned years of effort and fundraising for a Broome County All Wars Memorial are finally paying off. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 12, at the Veterans’ Arena at the Binghamton Mall. All U.S. military veterans and their supporters are welcome.
The bad news was that the federal government continues to make deep cuts in veterans’ benefits and services at a time when it is flooding the system with wounded and disabled service members from the War on Terror.

PEF Veterans Committee Co-Chair David Krobe urged all veterans to register with the Veterans Administration.
“Only 47 percent of veterans are registered,” he said.

Krobe said the committee also is concerned about threats to close an Air Force base in Niagara Falls, and the union continues to seek improvements to the Veterans’ Buy Back Law.

One of the biggest problems vets face in getting lawmakers to respond to their issues, Krobe said, is that “most politicians have never served in the armed forces and their family members have never served.”

Dick Collins, the other Veterans Committee co-chair, said it’s important to distinguish between “politicians who have supported us right down the line, and the others who just want our votes and to have their pictures taken with us, and then they forget us.”
